Shaun O’Gorman - PTSD in Law Enforcement

Shaun O’Gorman - PTSD in Law Enforcement

October 13, 2020

It would be fair to say that Shaun has seen his fair share of violence and depravity throughout his life. In fact, more like many lives worth.

But it has not defined the man he has become today. Despite it trying its very best.

Shaun O’Gorman is a highly accomplished and recognised Retired Police Officer and former member of the Queensland Police Dog Squad, or K9 Unit. After joining the force at the tender age of 19, Shaun worked his way up to the K9 unit at just age 22. His normal ‘every day’ would consist of anything from violent domestic disturbances, armed hold-ups, vehicle pursuits or large brawls. Shaun also worked as a tactical dog handler with the Special Emergency Response Team (SWAT). Several years later he joined the Covert and Surveillance Unit working on Major and Organised Crime syndicates trafficking in narcotics and other serious criminal activities.

Shaun thought he was living his dream with every night filled with excitement, violence and the opportunity to push himself to his limits and help others. He loved his career. But it did not last. After a period of time, he realised that he was unfulfilled and becoming more angry, reactive and violent. He was in weekly fist fights and was encountering more and more violent offenders. He actively sought out confrontations as he became more and more addicted to the adrenaline and the opportunity to prove he was tough and fearless as a way to try to manage the significant impact his career was having on him.

Shaun left the Police when he was 31 and began a very dark time in his life. He had lost the career, his identity and felt like a failure. The violence and depravity he had seen human beings perpetrate against each other meant he lost all faith in humanity.

He suffered Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, clinical depression, drank excessively, was very angry and came extremely close to suicide many times.

What followed was a 17-year journey of personal development courses, study, education, working with coaches and mentors and finding every piece of information possible on resilience, stress and leadership – with an end goal of healing himself and becoming an effective leader in his own life.

He now devotes his life to helping others using the knowledge, education and experience that helped him help himself. While forging a successful corporate executive career after leaving the Police, Shaun developed and now continues to follow his passion for helping other people.

Enson Inoue - Walking the Warrior’s Path

Enson Inoue - Walking the Warrior’s Path

October 6, 2020

What a crazy honour it is to sit and talk with one of my teenage heroes, a man who embodies the warrior spirit, Enson Inoue.

Enson Inoue is an MMA legend having fought in both PRIDE and the UFC against the toughest fighters in the world at their peak - fighters like Randy Couture, Frank Shamrock, Minotauro Nogueira, Igor Vovchanchyn, Mark Kerr, Heath Herring and more. Enson became famous for his philosophy of "Yamato Damashii" (or Japanese soul). In this exclusive interview, Enson talks about his willingness to die in the ring, some of the craziness that his warrior spirit got him into outside of the ring, and his humanitarian efforts since retirement.

ALL PATREON PROCEEDS FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER WILL GO TO THE ENSON INOUE FOUNDATION!

If you would like to donate personally, please go to ensoninouefoundation.org or you can order a handmade bracelet http://www.destinyforever.com/

S6. Ep. 8: Geoff Thompson - Transcending Violence

S6. Ep. 8: Geoff Thompson - Transcending Violence

September 7, 2020

He's the grandfather of modern self-defence. A legendary martial artist whose journey of self-discovery and self-destruction on the doors of Coventry nightclubs was documented in the paradigm shifting memoir, Watch My Back. His breakthrough training methods such as Animal Day training changed the way self-defence was taught throughout the world in the 1990s. Since then, Geoff Thompson has written more than 45 books, stage plays, films, a musical and won a BAFTA. His martial arts journey has led to a profound spiritual journey, encompassed in his latest book, Notes From A Factory Floor.

It is my profound privilege to interview one of my personal heroes, and a man who inspired so much of my early work, the incomparable Geoff Thompson.

S6. Ep.7: Richard Norton - Martial arts legend, former bodyguard and Hollywood stuntman

August 31, 2020

You will be hard-pressed to find a martial artist with the depth and breadth of experience that Richard Norton possesses. After 55 years of continuous training, Richard combines practical experience working in bars and clubs in the 70's, bodyguarding the world's biggest celebrities through the 80's, starring in martial arts films with the likes of Chuck Norris and Jackie Chan, holding high dan-ranks in Zen Do Kai, Goju-ryu karate, Chun Kuk Do, and Brazilian JiuJitsu, and choreographing fights in some of the biggest Hollywood blockbusters in recent years.

Richard has had a huge impact on my journey as a martial artist and it was great to sit down and have this conversation with him.

August 25, 2020

Savannah Archambault is a self-defence instructor and founder of SAVage Hybrid Combat Systems based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Growing up in a military family, Savannah always had an urge to protect her community and be of service. She eventually found her calling after stumbling across the legendary Kevin Secours and becoming an instructor in his system of self-defence.

In this conversation we tackle some hard topics and provide a criminally under-represented view of what it's like to be a female in a combatives class, the motivations and mindset for women entering these classes, and the advantages and disadvantages of being a woman who wants to teach self-defence.

Savannah also shares openly about her experience of rape and sexual assault and the impact that has had on her and the way she teaches.

S6. Ep. 1: Paul Vunak - Journey of a Martial Arts Legend

S6. Ep. 1: Paul Vunak - Journey of a Martial Arts Legend

July 20, 2020

How do you accidentally become a close personal friend and student of both Dan Inosanto and Rickson Gracie? Paul Vunak is a legend in the martial arts, a man that many feel is the true successor of Bruce Lee, a former hand-to-hand combat instructor for SEAL Team Six, and holder of more accolades than it bears to mention.

He is the founder and head of the Progressive Fighting Systems and he has been the key component to bringing Bruce Lee's art of Jeet Kune Do into today's real world of combat. He has bridged the gap on how to break down the "MMA Matrix" with traditional arts of Wing Chun (specifically trapping), the destructive combat proven art of Filipino Kali, the power and finesse of boxing and Muay Thai, the ground equalizer of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, the Filipino art of Kino Mutai and the core of the R.A.T. program - headbutts, knees and elbows.

S5. Ep. 5: What’s wrong with self-defence with Daz Norton

May 21, 2020

Daz Norton is the founder of Fendo UK (Integrated Defence Systems). Living a lifestyle of Combat Arts spaning almost 3 decades in the UK, Daz started training in as many styles and systems as he possibly could. However, it wasn't until working in front line Security (Store Detective, Security Management and Consulting, Bouncer, Close Protection) as well as working for Law enforcement in roles as a Police Officer and Custody Officer that he came to deal with serious violence on a daily basis.

With the understanding of how to deal with aggressors, violence and survive high risk situations and environments, Daz developed his training methods based on pressure testing all techniques, concepts and drills to see what adaptions are needed to function in REAL situations. Daz continues to develop standards of training for professionals and civilians ensuring that everything taught and trained is relevant to the end users needs.
